Destined for cultdom, Andrew J. Lambie’s dazzling and grotesque debut is the tale of a travelling Victorian freak show shipwrecked in mysterious circumstances on a deserted island.
The story is narrated by Dirty Boy – since childhood confined to a 2-foot Mason’s jar. After the initial exuberance at the founding of the freak empire, matters turn macabre: strange accidents befall members of the mangled nation while their self-elected leader, the megalomaniac Brigadier, seems intent on the recovery of a talisman in the shape of an enormous egg. Along with Cedric the Dwarf and Ruby the Hermaphrodite, Dirty Boy soon finds himself embroiled in a plot which affects not only daily rations, but maybe the rest of humanity.
Thundering, philosophical and downright irreverent, those with a heart condition or frail sensibilities would be wise to consult their physician before embarking upon the Carnival's mind-bending waltz.
